Philadelphia Police Sergeant Indicted in Tow Truck Bribery Scheme — Accepted Weekly $200 Payments to Text Crash Addresses

Philadelphia police sergeant Brian Smith, a 12-year veteran assigned to the 26th District, was indicted for accepting weekly $200 bribes from one tow driver and monthly $800 to $1,000 bribes from another from December 2015 through October 2016, in exchange for secretly texting them the addresses of crashes and disabled vehicles, according to WHYY. The scheme gave the paying operators an unfair advantage over competitors on the rotation list.

Operator takeaway

A police sergeant texting crash locations to paying tow drivers for $200 a week — if competitors in your market are arriving at scenes before dispatch calls them, report the pattern to the FBI, not just your supervisor.
