NYC's Most-Complained Tow Company Charged Man $1,660 After Towing Car with No NYPD Record of the Order

Clutch Towing in Brooklyn, which received 86 complaints to 311 in 2025 — more than any other tow company in the five boroughs — charged Michael Medved $1,660 after towing his vehicle on January 2 without notifying him until mid-February, according to MoneyWise. An NYPD spokesperson told reporters they could not find any record of police ordering the tow, and the company holds an F rating from the Better Business Bureau.

Operator takeaway

Document every tow authorization source — when a complaint leads to a records check and no police order exists, the operator has no defense.
