A Totaled EV Sat in a New Hampshire Tow Yard for Four Days. Then It Exploded.

A 2026 Lucid Gravity that struck the Bedford toll plaza on March 31 reignited at Bailey's Towing and Auto Body in Merrimack, New Hampshire on April 7 after the owner repositioned the vehicle in the yard, according to the Concord Monitor. The battery pack's 6,000-plus Panasonic lithium-ion cells entered thermal runaway within 15 minutes. Merrimack firefighters used approximately 60,000 gallons of water over several hours to suppress the blaze. Foam and fire blankets could not stop the chain reaction. Bailey's owner Jim Bailey Sr. told the Concord Monitor that operators should stage damaged EVs away from buildings, inventory, and fuel storage. The vehicle had been monitored under a fire blanket since the original crash.
