Rising Fuel Costs Threaten Southeast Texas Trucking as Diesel Tops $5 and Surcharges Spread

Gas prices have risen more than 30% since the start of the Iran conflict, with diesel above $5 per gallon and putting pressure on Southeast Texas truckers and the broader supply chain, according to 12News Beaumont. Carl Cormier, CDL program director at Lamar State College Orange with 30 years in the industry, said trucking companies will have little choice but to pass the added costs on to consumers; Amazon, UPS, FedEx, and USPS have already implemented fuel surcharges.

Operator takeaway

If Amazon, UPS, FedEx, and USPS are all adding written fuel surcharges, you have the market precedent to add yours. Do it in writing before your next contract cycle.
