Long Island Tow Truck Operator Richard Rodriguez, 32, Struck and Killed on Sunrise Highway While Loading Disabled Vehicle

Richard Rodriguez, 32, of Freeport was struck and killed by a passing car driven by Anthony Licalzi, 38, of Massapequa while attempting to load a disabled vehicle onto his tow truck on the shoulder of westbound Sunrise Highway near Brentwood Road in Bay Shore on April 15, 2025, according to News 12 Long Island. Licalzi's vehicle crossed several lanes of traffic and struck the center median after the collision; it was unclear whether charges would be filed.

Operator takeaway

Rodriguez was 32 years old and loading a vehicle in broad daylight on a suburban highway — there is no safe time or safe road for shoulder work without proper traffic control.
